Binalig Typeface
This was a school project to create a typeface inspired by a South-East Asian musical instrument. I chose the Kulintang Ensemble from Southern Philippines.
The typeface is titled "Binalig" which means "made different", referring to the change and innovation, most notable in the ensemble's rhythm. The music of the kulintang is often described as mimicking the rippling waves that fishermen frequently encounter, as it is fast and constant, offering little to no breaks between notes, let alone passages.
Binalig typeface aims to capture these characteristics and reinterpret this traditional South Philippine artform into a different medium altogether. Inspired by both the form and musical quality of the kulintang, Binalig marries tradition with modernity, reinterpreting a cultural artform into something more contemporary.
The typeface was used in the context of Philippine cuisine, appearing (as shown above and in the gallery below) on placemats, coasters, napkins, and menus.
